Information found in data supplied by David Bannear
Storms in mid-July 1964 disintegrated the hut below the tower. The hut was used to house radio repeater equipment and to serve as a shelter for the towerman during electrical storms.
The 18m steel tower was dismantled in 1968 and replaced by a 50m radio/telephone tower and fire watch cabin (at 23m). The old tower was to be re-erected at Black Mountain that year but budget shortfall had this plan shelved for a year.
